On Thursday nights each week, the print shop would invite a different artist to hand print an edition of fifty posters. Attendees were encouraged to screen print a piece themselves while enjoying music, food and drinks. It took years of work to complete the renovation from its original state and the end result is impressive. Since its restoration, it has been featured in several car shows and has won trophies every time. He asked me to create a logo for some screen printed t-shirts that would say something about who he was and set him apart from the crowd at these shows. The wolf represents the nickname he was given by his father as a kid, "Lobito". The cross on the wolf's arm is a rendition of his own tattoo. The company is known for producing the highest quality footwear created in the oldest tradition of bootmaking. My primary focus was pattern making and design for these wild and elaborate custom cowboy boots. The process began with a client consultation, where I would take measurements of a client's foot and discuss their design concept with them. Then I would draw a pattern according to their specifications. Once approved, I would hand it to our in-house artisans who would cut or tool the design into panels of leather completely by hand, then sew it together. After that, the assembled boot or leather panel would be returned to me and I would stain or hand paint the finishing touches. The entire timeline from preliminary sketches to a finished pair of boots typically took about three months. This particular pair is an original design I did for a client who requested imagery honoring his grandfather whose favorite phrase was, "Ride fast, shoot straight, tell the truth." Wood type appeals to me for its organic qualities and the subject matter I was working with dealt very much with my connection to nature. I began with a blind embossing of a word, which would take various forms in print. The second layer is an inked print of that word that I then singed with fire. The final layer consists of topographical photos of glaciers, mountains or streams, all of which served as backdrops for some impactful events in my life.
